Scottish Fold

The Scottish Fold

Scottish Fold cats are sweet, mild-mannered cats whose most prominent features are the folded ears and big, round eyes. These physical features make cats of this breed look curious and oddly charming. They are generally easy cats to take care of as they are less-vocal and easily adaptable to new people and environments. They are largely not as active as other cat breeds, so Scottish Folds are perfect for those who prefer a pet to chill and snuggle with. They are fiercely loyal and devoted to their primary carer, and will require attention when they want it. Even so, Scottish Folds are independent cats that enjoy a good toy-chasing from time to time.

Brief history of Scottish Folds

Originally, upon discovering this breed, Scottish Folds were called Lops after the lop-eared rabbit, but the name was changed to pay homage to its country of origin. This breed was first discovered in 1961 in Scotland, and by 1978, the Scottish Fold became one of the most popular breeds in North America.

Characteristics

Scottish Folds have a medium build and rounded facial features including the chin, cheeks, and nose. They also have short necks in addition to short legs, but their tails are generally in proportion to the length of their bodies. Most importantly, the small ears of a Scottish Fold cat are folded forward and downward, with pointed tips. The coats on a Scottish Fold come in two variations: long hair and short hair. Long-haired Scottish Folds have medium to long hair length, while short-haired Scottish Folds have dense coats that are soft to the touch and evenly distributed. This breed is non-hypoallergenic.

General care guide

Some Scottish Fold cats face increased wax build-up in their folded ears, so assistance is needed in cleaning their ears. The folded ears are a result of a genetic mutation that causes the ear cartilage to fold, and even though this breed does not face increased chances of ear mites or ear infections. Owners must ensure the health of their Scottish Folds are well monitored. With regards to grooming requirements, the fur coats on Scottish Folds are generally low-maintenance and will only require brushing to remove dead hairs. Other general health, nutritional, and dental care applies.

Interesting fact: Scottish Folds have been discovered from as early as 1796, when an English sailor returned from China with a cat with folded ears.
