The Maine Coon is the largest cat breed and these cats are known to be dependable, robust, and incredibly intelligent gentle giants. Maine Coons are playful yet reserved around strangers, and they often require an adjustment period to get comfortable around new people and environments. But when a bond is formed with their human, they are fiercely loyal and affectionate. They enjoy playing outdoors and are always curious to find out what people around them are doing. The most endearing habit of Maine Coons is the adorable noises they emit when they feel content.
Brief history of Maine Coons
Maine Coons are a longhaired breed native to the United States. They are known to have adapted to survive the wet and freezing climates of Maine in the 18th century, by developing large physiques and thick water-resistant coats through natural selection and this adaptation has persisted ever since.
Characteristics
Maine Coons are big-sized cats that have long, muscular bodies and broad chests. They have high cheekbones and strong chins that showcase their robustness. Their ears are covered with thick tufts that appear pointed at the tip. Their eyes come in many different colours, and they sometimes have beautiful odd-eyes (different colours in each eye). They have large, tufted paws and long, tapering tails that are covered in fluffy fur. The most striking feature of Maine Coons are their shaggy and luxurious coats that are silky to the touch. This breed boasts 30 different variations of fur colours. This breed is non-hypoallergenic.
General care guide
Due to the nature of their thick, shaggy fur coat, Maine Coons require frequent grooming, although they do manage their own grooming well. They should be brushed and combed daily to ensure that there are no tangles in their coat and to prevent painful matted fur. Maine Coons require regular exercise to maintain their big bodies, so cat trees and other toys are preferred. However, Maine Coons have a tendency to become overweight if their diet and nutrition is not monitored adequately. Other general health, nutritional, and dental care applies.
Interesting fact: Maine Coons were once considered to be extinct in the 1950s but today, they are one of the most popular cat breeds in the world!
